Un-programmed Worship

Our Meeting for Worship is a primarily silent, un-programmed gathering. Worship is a special time in the midst of our worldly concerns, in which we seek together inwardly for the strength to discern God's will and guidance with our problems, responsibilities, and faith. For those unaccustomed to silence, the first experience of Meeting may be uncomfortable. Time is needed to center down into inward stillness. Every Meeting is an adventure. We hope you will find a deeper awareness of what Friends for three centuries have called the Inner Light, the Light of Christ, the Seed, and That of God in Everyone.

The silence may be broken by anyone who feels moved by the Spirit to share an insight, message, or prayer. Such sharing is usually succinct, as ministry is shared rather than coming through one individual. A period of silence again follows each message so that it may be incorporated and appreciated by each one of us present. It is not expected that you agree with nor even grasp everything that is said. Even broken and imperfect words may spring from a deep place in the heart.

When a message speaks to the condition of those present, and is harmoniously developed and enriched either by further messages, or by a deepened silence, a profound sense of spiritual community may occur: what we call a "gathered meeting."

Our children attend First Day School (Sunday School) for the first forty-five minutes of Meeting, with three or four different age-groups led by volunteers from the adult group. They then join us for the last portion of worship. The close of Meeting for Worship occurs after about an hour, when a designated person shakes hands with those nearby. We then greet those sitting around us in the same manner. All are invited to participate in introductions and announcements which follow the rise of Meeting.
